See the following article in Air Tran magazine about the neighborhood: http://airtranmagazine.com/contents/2007/09/atlanta%E2%80%99s-westside/

The Westside Waterworks area is an eclectic intown area composed of old warehouses (our building is not an old warehouse) which have been renovated into office and residential lofts and restaurants, bars, and interior decorating stores. It's a hot entertainment district. It's compared to New York's meatpacking district which is apt since this indeed, is an old meatpacking district. See www.artery.org. and http://www.artery.org/Directory/Directory.htm It still looks a little sketchy but is not. All the panhandlers and parasites are east of the downtown connector in Midtown proper. This neighborhood of old warehouses converted into antique shops, bars, restaurants, decorating and design shops, and offices is the hottest and coolest area in Atlanta. But it's not for everyone – again, if you like suburbia you won't like this. (Note that a lot of the photographs of the old warehouses on www.artery.org are the "before renovation" photographs. Those buildings are now magnificent."

One bedroom apartment lofts across and a 75 yards down the street start at $ 1,300 plus utilities.

For information on the neighborhood please see www.artery.org and http://www.artery.org Among the converted warehouse and meatpacking developments within walking distance are The King Plow Arts Center, http://www.artery.org/KingPlow.htm, Puritan Mill: http://www.puritanmill.com/, http://www.artery.org/PuritanSoapCo.htm, Midtown West, http://www.artery.org/MidtownWest.htm, the White Provision Building, http://www.artery.org/WhiteProvisionCo.htm, http://www.whiteprovision.com, the Means Street Historic District (no web site) – but the web sites of some of the major anchors are http://www.artery.org/BlockCandy.htm, www.thecontemporary.org, http://www.artery.org/Nexus.htm, http://www.artery.org/AtlantaBuggyCo.htm, and the Westside Urban Market http://www.westsideurbanmarket.com.

This area is the epitome of "urban chic." As an example - the perennially # 1 rated restaurant in Atlanta (and sometimes the Southeast) is just down the street. An excerpt from a review is as follows. The full article is at http://www.vegetariantimes.com/document_display.cfm?section_id=21&document_id=225:

"Bacchanalia is ... the winner of numerous awards, including its ranking as Atlanta’s top restaurant for several years running. The Atlanta newspaper says the following about Bacchanalia, "Bacchanalia effortlessly combines the ingredients that make it the grand dame of fine dining in Atlanta — warehouse chicness, formally informal service, generous portions and a menu that puts forth the best of local ingredients with an occasional Southern accent."

When their business had grown to the point where the couple had a waiting list at Bacchanalia, they moved it to its present larger location, a former meat-packing plant with ample room to house the Star Provisions marketplace. To reach Bacchanalia-a slick, modern, special-occasion restaurant with a sweeping view of Atlanta’s skyline-guests must pass through the market, a cravenous walk for anyone who may crave pastries, cheeses, local produce, and coffee, as well as cookbooks, crockery and cooking tools."

Another article about Bacchanalia is "Industrial Magic," the URL is http://static.highbeam.com/h/housebeautiful/october012000/industrialmagicremodelingofbacchanaliarestaurantin/

An article about another top ten in Atlanta restaurant (The Food Studio) located around the corner in a gorgeous of warehouse is: http://atlanta.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?zi=1/XJ&sdn=atlanta&zu=http%3A%2F%2Fthefoodstudio.com

Chow Baby, made the list of Atlanta's top 30 restaurants and is about three minute walk. http://www.therealchowbaby.com. Additionally, an upscale pizza place with an eclectic mid century – with fireplace and couches – lounge opened just across the street from Chow Baby. It made one magazine's pick of the week. http://www.atlantacuisine.com/pastpicks/slicepizza.html

The widely acclaimed seafood restaurant - Six Feet Under - is opening it's 2nd restaurant a block away with a huge rooftop deck to take advantage of the Atlanta skyline view from this ridge.

The Midtown West warehouse development, see http://www.artery.org/MidtownWest.htm , 2 blocks away in the King Plow/Railroad Historic District has several new spots going in including the excellent Toscano & Sons Italian market. See http://www.toscanoandsons.com. as well as the acclaimed FIVE SEASONS BREWPUB.

Several establishments within a short walking distance were voted "Best in Atlanta" by various publications such as the entertainment rag, "Creative Loafing," and "Atlanta Magazine". For example, OCTANE was voted best coffee place in town (it is about a three minute walk), NORTHSIDE TAVERN – a real dive - is always voted the best blues spot in town (less than a five minute walk), BACCHANALIA perennially is always voted the best overall restaurant in town (about a ten minute walk), THE FOOD STUDIO always makes the top ten best restaurants in town (a ten minute walk), ATLANTA YOGA, in a really cool space in an old warehouse, is always voted best Yoga studio in town and it is a two minute walk, TACQUERIA DEL SOL is very reasonably priced and is sometimes voted the best Southwestern in town and is about a ten minute walk, FIGO makes the top ten lists of Italian restaurants in town and is a ten minute walk, ROCKY MOUNTAIN PIZZA, in a really cool old brick triangular building, is a big college trivia bar place and is my "best of Atlanta" for cheap beer – lots of brands of beer in bottles for $ 1.50, STAR PROVISIONS gets awards for best of Atlanta for specialty groceries (it is a ten minute walk and too expensive), CARVER'S GROCERY (not a grocery but a lunch spot) perennially makes the top five for down home Southern cooking and is where the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, judges, local celebrities, as well as construction workers, share tables eating lunch ( a 30 minute line forms at 11:00 am), and a four minute walk will get you the best seafood pub in town – SIX FEET UNDER, and the COMPOUND was rated the best nightclub in town and is a five minute walk, and a three minute walk will get you to the extraordinary highly touted and awarded FIVE SEASONS BREWPUB. And CHOW BABY “Best in Atlanta” for a first date. Several interior decorating shops have been voted "best in Atlanta" but since I don't keep up with them, I cannot tell you which ones.

And if the neighborhood were not safe, all the above economic and social activity wouldn’t be happening. Real estate sells for $ 2.0 millions per acre - not exactly an indication of a crime ridden neighborhood. Though there are suburbanites who will be afraid at first glance because they think criminals are oozing out of the old bricks of the warehouses since they don't look like suburbia.

I included the above so you can get a feel for the neighborhood and so you would realize exactly how much of a deal $ 450 per month including utilities is in this part of town. Contact roomRENTALatlanta@gmail.com for more info.

Tom
