For a sane man Obama certainly belongs to a rather mad church. It claims to be part of the United Church of Christ, which is evangelical, but at the non-wingnut end of that spectrum. However, the TUCC has grafted on to traditional American Protestantism some of the strange racially-based 'liberation theology' that informed strands of the civil rights movement.

Take a look at some of their beliefs:

"A congregation with a non-negotiable COMMITMENT TO AFRICA.
A congregation committed to the HISTORICAL EDUCATION OF AFRICAN PEOPLE IN DIASPORA.
A congregation committed to LIBERATION.
A congregation committed to RESTORATION."

On the same web page, the church says: "We are an African people, and remain "true to our native land," the mother continent, the cradle of civilization". Rev Jeremiah Wright, the church's main pastor, was quoted in Rolling Stone last year as including as including in one of his sermons the following: "Racism is how this country was founded and how this country is still run! . . . We believe in white supremacy and black inferiority and believe it more than we believe in God . . . And. And And! Gawd! Has GOT! To be SICK! OF THIS SHIT!". The church celebrates Kwanzaa, the phony winter festival invented by a Black Panther sympathiser and convicted felon (assault and torture) Ron Karenga. It's generally big on quasi-militant victimology and low on common sense. It is surely surprising that the man who supposedly can 'transcend' race issues in America belongs to a church which says on its website: "We constantly affirm our trust in God through cultural expression of a Black worship service and ministries which address the Black Community".

We can be fairly confident that Obama himself doesn't subscribe to this baloney. But surely some of his secular liberal media star-luvvin' buddies will be given pause? Why belong to a church you don't believe in? Most will be happy to write it off as pandering - it's still the case in this country that you have to be, or pretend to be, religious if you're going to win the Presidency and Democratic political boosters understand this. But if it gets much attention, it may cause some difficulties down the track - particularly with white Christians. But of course, it probably won't get much attention because his secular liberal media star-luvvin' buddies won't give it any.
