StandUp for Kids is a national agency run by volunteers dedicated to helping homeless, runaway, and at-risk youth. The Atlanta chapter is seeking volunteers to provide a hot dinner at our Outreach Center in downtown Atlanta on Wednesday and Friday evenings.
The intent and purpose of the Outreach Center is to provide a safe and protective environment for homeless and at-risk youth, fostering the support network of basic needs and development through educational programs, one-on-one counseling, and an ongoing atmosphere of hope and concern. We offer the youth a hot meal, shower, laundry services, computer time, and assistance in accessing additional resources. The center opens at 6:00 pm, and the meal is served between 6:30 – 7:30 pm. We ask that our meal service volunteers provide enough food for 10-20 people, so that each of the kids and counselors can have a meal. There is a large kitchen on site with an oven and microwave for reheating.
We typically ask our volunteers to provide a main course, a vegetable or salad, dessert and drinks. Fresh fruit and crackers are always nice additions, as the kids can take them when they leave. We like for groups to provide all items necessary for the meal (cups, paper plates, utensils, etc) so that the Outreach Team does not have to worry about anything associated with the meal and can focus on the kids. If there are any leftovers and your group does not mind, we like to box up the food and pass the remaining out to the kids for a later meal. Meal service volunteers must be at least 18 years of age.
We are currently in need of meal service volunteers for the following dates: March 14, March 26, April 23, April 30
