Operation Tech Start (http://operationtechstart.org) is a new project that is dedicated to finding ways to improve the lives of impoverished Africans through information and communication technologies. We are currently looking for qualified volunteers who thrive in challenging environments to live and work in Tanzania, East Africa for 10 weeks. Ideal candidates will fit the following criteria: - Understanding of Windows and Linux operating systems
- Knowledge of networking protocols, architectures, and solutions (i.e. DSL, Fiber Optic Cables, WiFi, WiMAX, VoIP, IVRs, audio formats)
- Hands-on experience programming mobile data transfer applications
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- A willingness to exercise patience and a desire to learn!
Volunteers will be working in a small team of local and U.S. professionals this summer to help begin the research study in the rural areas and monitor the computer lab for kids. Duties will include: - Preparing and participating in focus groups with farmers on communication practices
- Facilitating meetings with key stakeholders to assess connectivity and capacity options
- Monitoring computer classes for on-going status reports
- Assisting in the day-to-day operations of a new non-profit organization
COSTS: Budget at least $1500 for the cost of living for 10 weeks to cover the cost of housing, transportation, and Swahili language training. NOT INCLUDED:The estimate cost above does not cover airfare, insurance, personal spending money, or the costs to go on safari or climb Mount Kilimanjaro should you wish to do those things while you are in Tanzania.
