SOUTHERN RESEARCH INSTITUTE is seeking outstanding applicants for a senior staff position in the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Department, which is part of our Drug Discovery Division. The Division uses an interdisciplinary approach to translate basic research into FDA-approved drugs.
We are particularly interested in attracting a scientist with an outstanding research program in bacteriology with translational potential toward the identification or characterization of therapeutic targets. Candidates with an interest in collaboration with medicinal chemists and our high-throughput screening center are particularly encouraged to apply. To be considered, applicants must possess a Ph.D. in microbiology, or related discipline and postdoctoral experience. The successful candidate will be expected to obtain grant-based funding for their research investigations. Transitional funding and technical support will be available for new investigators. Senior investigators with a track record of research support are also encouraged to apply.

Southern Research Institute, a not-for-profit research organization affiliated with the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), has annual revenues in excess of $70 million and employs approximately 600 professional, technical, and support personnel. Five anti-cancer drugs and a sixth drug that protects patients against the side effects of chemo- or radiotherapy were discovered by Institute personnel and are now used in the clinic. Several other new anti-cancer agents are currently in development or undergoing clinical trials.
The Institute also has research programs to identify new agents for the treatment of a variety of bacterial, viral, and fungal diseases. In conjunction with this, a state-of-the art BSL3/ABSL3 facility is available for research with risk group 3 pathogens.
